Fundatia Inocenti - Romanian Children's Relief
Adi is one of the friendliest and most energetic children in the Fundatia Inocenti Early Intervention Program. But it wasn’t always that way. Three weeks after he was born, following what appeared to be a normal pregnancy, Adi was diagnosed with Down syndrome. This came as devastating news to Adi’s mother, Cristina, and her parents with whom she lived.
Nevertheless, Adi’s tight-knit family embraced him, as well as his challenges, and took action from the outset. Cristina researched her son’s disorder and enrolled in nursing school to learn more about Down syndrome and child development. Cristina’s mom, Matronica, took early retirement in order to serve as Adi’s daily caretaker. Our Inocenti team in Bistrita have also helped the family make ends meet by providing clothing, hygiene products, food and vitamin supplements.
Concerned about Adi’s seeming inability to acquire rudimentary language skills, the family took him to Fundatia Inocenti in Bistrita when he was little more than a year old. Happily, he took an immediate liking to Inocenti staff psychologist Ioana Miron.
“At first it was very hard,” says Ioana, “He was moody and unresponsive, but we pressed on, and in time he began speaking pretty well.”
“Adrian just loves Ioana,” reports his grandmother. “When we come for a session, he says hello to everyone, and then says thank you!”
From the start, Fundatia Inocenti also recognized that Adi needed regular physical and sensory therapy. Working with him week after week, it took two years for the boy’s motor skills to reach acceptable levels. Over time, with an assist from Adi’s own cooperative attitude, other benefits became tangible from repeated games, motor and sensory exercises, and activities structured to the child’s capabilities. Today he can count to 10, name colors, shapes, objects, and even letters. He carries on simple conversations and executes both simple and complex commands. “He is such a friendly and loving child,” Ioana observes, “that I have to be careful not to let him charm me out of doing tasks that I give him!”
At home, he likes to help his grandmother, Bunica, do the dishes and dust furniture. “He loves running around the house and sometimes it’s a challenge to keep up with him,” Matronica says. He also enjoys the annual Olympiade Inocenti and always joins the day trips Inocenti organizes to parks, playgrounds, and local merchants such as the pastry shop.
Perhaps the culmination of Adi’s early training was the decision to enroll him in kindergarten at his public school. There was anxiety on the part of his family and his new teachers, but our Inocenti team helped Adi’s family advocate with the school and in the end, Adi’s incredible friendliness and sincerity won over his new classmates and teachers alike.
“When I go to pick him up at the end of the school day,” his grandmother notes, “the first thing he does is kiss his teachers goodbye. It is this special love that helped us get over our early sadness and see Adi for the wonderful little person he is. We refused to treat him just as a sick or special-needs child.
“To see him fit into a normal kindergarten class has been a dream come true.”

TO ALL OF OUR GENEROUS RCR-INOCENTI SUPPORTERS, we wish you all of the hope and joy that you make possible for children like Adi every day. Sarbatori Fericite! Happy Holidays!

și British School of Bucharest!
